Chelsea boss José Mourinho has accepted that Cesc Fabregas was easily the best player on the pitch in the club’s opening Premier league match of the season against Burnley. Chelsea conceded an early goal that threatened to disrupt their positive start to the season, but they stunned their opposition with a brilliant first half in which they were almost unstoppable. Three goals inside 20 minutes asserted their superiority in the match and allowed the players to have a relaxed second-half. Fabregas, Diego Costa, and Thibaut Courtois were all the key players making their debuts for Chelsea in this match.
Fabregas contributed two assists and was also involved in the opening goal scored by Diego Costa. He was chosen as the man of the match, a decision that completely pleased manager Mourinho. Fabregas said after signing for Chelsea that Mourinho had gone to extreme lengths to convince him that a move to Chelsea was the right to the stage in his career. The 27-year-old is at the peak of his powers and his next destination was very important after deciding to leave Barcelona. A number of clubs including Manchester United were interested in him, but he eventually signed for Chelsea for just around £ 27 million.
Mourinho expects Fabregas to play key role for Chelsea in the next five years. “I agree completely with Cesc as man of the match. He controlled the tempo of the game and was responsible for the best phase of our play. I hope he has more of that. We know he's capable. More important than the pass was the control he had with the game, the understanding he had with Nemanja Matic which brings our team to a different dimension in the quality of football that we play,” said Mourinho, who failed to win a major trophy last season.
