Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas says that he was happy to see Leicester City win the Premier League title for the first time in their history.
The victory was achieved thanks to Chelsea drawing 2-2 with Tottenham, who were Leicester’s closest rivals in the league. Tottenham came into the game knowing that they have to win in order to keep Leicester from wrapping up the title. The foxes had an eight-point advantage with just three games left, but Spurs failed to keep in touch. Despite taking a 2-0 lead into halftime, they could only draw the game.
The result handed Leicester City their league title. Many Chelsea players had expressed their wish to see Leicester – rather than Tottenham – win the title. Apart from the general feeling of seeing an underdog succeed, Spurs are a major rival for Chelsea due to their location. In a campaign where Chelsea have struggled immensely, seeing Tottenham win the league title would have been disastrous for the morale. Players like Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa, and Eden Hazard have come out in support of Leicester City being crowned as the champions. In a feisty encounter at Stamford Bridge on Monday night, Chelsea produced an impressive second half performance to draw the game.
Fabregas has been in impeccable form over the last few weeks and he continued this run against Spurs.“That is what football is about, that is why you love this sport so much. It was a fantastic second half and I think everyone enjoyed it. What a fantastic night and season for them (Leicester) and it is unbelievable.Whatever happens from now on, in 20, 30, 40 years they will keep talking about it so congratulations and I hope they enjoy it. They deserve it very much and well done,” said the Chelsea midfielder after the game.
